Camp Activities

Ropes Course / Challenge Course *

Challenge courses are designed to build teamwork, trust, communication and problem solving skills. Courses are made up of obstacles that create artificial stresses for participants to overcome and gain confidence. Our course is constructed of rope, wood, trees, cable, and hardware. These items along with all safety and climbing gear, are inspected regularly and the course has been certified to meet the ACCT* standards. Our “Ropes Instructors” as well are certified and tested on their skills and knowledge. The ropes course elements are only used as part of a scheduled program under the leadership of our trained facilitators.

Camp Oro Quay has several “low” and “high” elements. The low elements utilize obstacles that are near the ground. Most of the elements are only a few inches high. These elements are the foundation for our program. The participants learn to work together to accomplish goals. They must learn to consider the dynamics of their group and integrate each person’s strengths and weaknesses in order to achieve success. The high elements are more advanced. Most of the elements are over 20 feet high and all participants use harnesses, helmets and other equipment to ensure their safety.

Our ropes program is a sequential-based program. We start with basic games and activities to build a foundation of trust and team work. When the group has had a chance to establish these primary standards, the activities move toward problem solving. As the teams spend time working together, they learn about the importance of leadership, communication, planning and teamwork. This type of training requires adequate time in order to create a successful transference of learning that can develop into life skills and lessons. The program builds on trusting others, equipment and one’s own learned skills.

By the end of the program we often hear such things as, “I never thought I could do that”, “I did it!”, “We did great!”, “Wow!”.

Ropes courses are designed to “stretch” the participants in trying new things. We never push or force anyone to participate. There is no name-calling or belittling. Our focus is positive and encouraging. Each person in a group participates at what ever level they choose. If you have never tried this type of educational program, we highly recommended it.
